The Liechtenstein Trail
Day 5 - From Ruggell to Schaanwald

Ruggeller Riet in winter

After a restful night at Hotel Kommod, we tackle the last part of the hike. The Ruggeller nature reserve invites us to pause and enjoy the silence and nature. With the fog, the Ruggeller Riet seems almost mystical. In Ruggeller Riet we first visit the organic farm "Bangshof Ruggell", where Lina buys a large piece of Liechtenstein cheese as a souvenir for her mother.

A short but steep climb takes us to the next highlight. Arriving in Schellenberg, we escape the fog. The sun's rays meet our happy faces, overwhelmed by the view of two impressive castle ruins.

Now it is time for us to descend the metres of altitude we have climbed before. We cross the village of Mauren and, after a short urban intermezzo, arrive at the Birka Bird Paradise. Birdwatchers and families get their money's worth while strolling through the aviaries and the adjacent nature reserve. On the last three kilometres we once again cross wide fields and picturesque forests before finally reaching the end of the Liechtenstein Trail at the Schaanwald customs office. "We've made it!" Mo beams and hugs me joyfully.
