Polly Apfelbaum (*1955) is a New York-based painter who has been bringing together a clash of different currents in post-war American painting since the mid-1980s.

Merging their basic principles, she adds an emphasis on craftsmanship, intuition and process to the mathematical thinking of conceptual painting and minimal art. Her hybrid, variable works extend the spectrum of geometry, colour, grid, originality and repetition with spontaneity and vivacity. Her Fallen Paintings are a direct comment on the predicted "death of painting": an extension and dispersion of painting into three-dimensional space. With their garish colours or floral patterns, these mosaic-style paintings consisting of countless hand-cut pieces of fabric or paper are reminiscent of pop art. At the same time, there is an expressionist or actionist gesture inherent in their physical expanse, with Apfelbaum going far beyond a new formalist approach in her painting.
