Via Alpina

In the international year of the mountains in 2002, the alpine countries have set the target to establish a non-stop and specially marked long-distance hiking trail, linking all the countries.

In Liechtenstein, this 'Via Alpina' runs along the formerly named long-distance trail 102, from the Saroja saddle to the Pfälzer cabin. The Via Alpina, connecting Trieste in a wide alpine circle to Monaco, enters Liechtenstein via the Frastanz-Saroja saddle and leaves the Liechtenstein stretch of the trail after 20 kms towards Grisons (Switzerland).

Tip: From the Pfälzer cabin, the Via Alpina follows the southern Rätikon high-altitude trail to the Carschina cabin: a lovely stretch of the trail passing underneath limestone walls and along seas of flowers.

Family tip: Lodging at the Gafadura cabin, the Pfälzer cabin or the Sücka mountain inn.

Alternative A: If travelling by bus to Planken, get off at the Hotel Saroja bus stop. From there, walk up to the Gafadura cabin (distance: 3.5 kms / elevation difference: 640 m).

Alternative B: Alpine ascent via the Three Sisters.

Alternative C: Descent from the Pfälzer cabin to Malbun (distance: 5.5 kms / elevation difference: 130 m).
