Dirty Amaretto Snowflakes

Whether "Spitzbuben", macaroons or something chocolatey, baking is simply part of the Liechtenstein Christmas season. With this classic recipe for amaretto cookies, even occasional bakers can join in and delight everyone in the process.

Ingredients (for 24 pieces)

  • 380g half-white flour
  • 25g cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 170g melted butter
  • 250g sugar
  • 180g apple puree
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 4-6 cl amaretto (optional)

Ingredients for decoration

  • 100g sugar (granulated)
  • 100g powdered sugar

Preparation

Preheat oven to 175° top/bottom heat.

Prepare the dough

In a bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Beat the butter and sugar with a mixer until fluffy. Gradually add the apple puree until everything is well blended. Stir in the vanilla extract, apple cider vinegar and amaretto.

Slowly add the dry ingredients and gently fold until everything is well combined.

Let the dough rest, covered in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

Decorate the snowflakes

Put the granulated sugar in a deep plate and the powdered sugar in a second plate.

Shape the dough into balls about the size of a tablespoon. Roll them first in the granulated sugar and then in the powdered sugar.

Bake in the oven for 10 - 12 minutes.

When the cookies come out f the oven, let them cool on the tray for about 10 minutes and then place them on a wire rack to cool completely.
